Draft:No Māori Allowed
[edit]Hi there, I have been working on Draft:No Māori Allowed over the past month. The article is about a documentary. Before I submit it, I need help with trimming the background and synopsis sections. The background section talks about the history of Pukekohe and the book that inspired it. Per Traumnovelle (talk · contribs)'s advice, I tried incorporating other sources besides Robert Bartholomew's self-published book No Maori Allowed from the Pukekohe article. However, that made the section too long. The synopsis covers the contents of the documentary. Having watched the documentary, my understanding is that the documentary was both a response and continuation of Bartholomew's book. The documentary focuses on incorporating Māori voices through Phyllis Bana and Pare Rauwhero. Open to hearing ideas and recommendations. Let me know if this documentary would merit a Wikipedia article. Will be busy over the weekend due to my Mum's funeral so my response might be a bit slow. Andykatib (talk) 03:24, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
- I could not see anything for Moon 2023. Should it be Moon 2020? (If so, I don't have access to it). My view on the countless articles like this about TV shows is they just amount to a repeat of what the show says. However, I might be missing something because these articles do have a following. Back to this draft, paragraph one.
- "In 2020, American medical sociologist and University of Auckland senior lecturer Robert Bartholomew released his self-published book No Maori Allowed: New Zealand's Forgotten History of Racial Segregation, which looked at the history of racial segregation and discrimination against Māori people in the Auckland suburb of Pukekohe.[6] During the early 20th century, several landless Māori from the Waikato migrated to Pukekohe to work in the township's market gardens as itinerant agricultural workers.[7][8] Many of these Māori workers and their families lived in substandard accommodation including shacks and sheds with no sanitation or plumbing. These contributed to an array of health problems and diseases among Pukekohe's Māori community.[9][8] According to Bartholomew's research, 73% (237) of all Māori deaths aged 14 years and under in Pukekohe between 1925 and 1961 were caused by preventable conditions linked to poverty and poor housing such as bronchitis, diphtheria, dysentry, gastroenteritis, malnutrition, measles, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and whooping cough.[10]"
- There is a grave risk that you will repeat what this self published book says, making it someone's opinion. There's an even greater risk that you will repeat what the TV producer says about the book writer's opinion - with anger, tears, exaggerations, omissions and gasps of indignation all thrown in for effect. That is exactly what the paragrapgh above does. IMO you havee to be very careful saying there was racial segregation in Pukekoe or anywhere in NZ, and if you do it should be carefully qualified so it is put in context. Racial segregation as it is generally understood is an official policy such as what happened in the southern USA and in South Africa, Nazi Germany. With the exception of Paul Moon, your sources all look to be primary or questionable in some way. I would try to focus not on what the TV show portrayed but rather the reaction to that TV show. If you do refer to what the TV show or book says, be careful not to portray it as fact, just as someone's opinion. Despite all that, I think the article is worth doing. Roger 8 Roger (talk) 07:14, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Roger 8 Roger:, thanks so much for your advice. I have corrected the publication date for the Paul Moon reference. His book Auckland: The Twentieth-Century was published in 2023, not 2020. I have corrected both the No Māori Allowed article and the Pukekohe article, which cites his book. I agree that Robert Bartholomew and the TV documentary's claims that there was racial discrimination and segregation in Pukekohe is something contested. Both the background and synopsis secitons will need to be condensed with the information being presented as opinion rather than facts. Would the Mister Organ documentary film article be a good template for this article? It has a brief synopsis section but focuses on the production and response. Andykatib 08:19, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Roger 8 Roger: and @Traumnovelle:, I have trimmed the synopsis for Draft:No Māori Allowed per the discussion me and Roger had in late November. - Hi @Traumnovelle:, thanks so much for your advice. Will go ahead and move the article to mainspace. Will be useful for Wikipedia's coverage of New Zealand topics. Cheers. Andykatib (talk) 08:01, 5 January 2025 (UTC)

CESNUR source
[edit]Hi there, I just wanted to bring to attention the inclusion of an article from the CESNUR publication Bitter Winter in the Jehovah's Witnesses section of the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care. The edits were made by @Alexander Bishop:, whose contributions have been limited to that article above. I have trimmed down his additions and formatted the sources. Just wasn't sure if it would be appropriate to include the CESNUR source given that CESNUR is considered an unreliable source at the Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Perennial sources page. Andykatib (talk) 03:12, 2 December 2024 (UTC)
- I read through all of the relevant RSN discussion and I don't see any evidence of actual unreliability. I think it is fine for an attributed statement, the person in question is a subject matter expert and as the text currently stands it clearly identifies it as an attributed opinion. Traumnovelle (talk) 03:56, 2 December 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Traumnovelle:, thanks for the clarification. I agree it should be safe to include Massimo Introvigne's article in the Jehovah's Witnesses section of the Royal Inquiry article. Cheers. Andykatib (talk) 04:36, 2 December 2024 (UTC)

Lack of article on SolarZero
[edit]Last week NZ company SolarZeto went into a very notable Liquidation. I'm Unable to find articles on SolarZero or the NZ Government's Green Investment Fund, I'm wondering if we should draft local articles or just update major shareholder BlackRock's article? From the blackRock perspective this is insignificant but from an NZ business viewpoint this is a big event. So which would be the better approach to take?Duncnbiscuit (talk) 00:21, 10 December 2024 (UTC)
- I think it would be good to create a new article for SolarZero as there are a lot of sources about it, including from before it collapsed. ―Panamitsu (talk) 02:20, 10 December 2024 (UTC)
TV3 News/NewsHub library to be available online.
[edit]An article here that the library of TV3 news footage has been donated to Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision and digitised. From March 2025 they will be available online. We should keep an eye out for this as it could provide an invaluable source for Wikipedians to use especially with the current memory hole of content online from the 1990s. Kiwichris (talk) 05:56, 10 December 2024 (UTC)
- That sounds like great news! Prosperosity (talk) 06:31, 10 December 2024 (UTC)
- To clarify - that article states the collection should be digitised by March 2025 - not that it will be online by then. "Ngā Taonga hopes to make most of the entire archive available online, once each story has been through a rights clearance process." Quilt Phase (talk) 06:45, 10 December 2024 (UTC)
New Zealand Historic Places featured lists
[edit]Hi all! For the past little bit now I've been writing up lists of the Heritage New Zealand-recognised sites and nominating them at FAC. So far I've gotten 6 territorial authority's historic places to FL out of the 65 (Taupo doesn't have enough sites to hit FL criteria, while Kawerau has none at all), with two more at FLC at the moment. Now, at current pace it will take me about 3 years to finish this, and I'm not sure I have it in for me that. If anyone else is interested about niche New Zealand local history, I would love to coordinate on this and get more lists done; this would make for one heck of a FT one day.
Additionally, if anyone wants to do source reviews for the two lists currently up there, that'd be splendid — not a lot of the FLC regulars want to trawl through a bunch of NZHP listings to make sure everything's up to scratch. Generalissima (talk) (it/she) 01:03, 12 December 2024 (UTC)
- They aren't territorial authorities but both Oamaru and Te Aroha have a lot of registered places with 70+ and 20 respectively. Both have historic area registrations too. [1] [2]
- I'll have a look at the source reviews soon if no one else has. Traumnovelle (talk) 01:40, 12 December 2024 (UTC)
- For Te Aroha, it makes sense to just incorporate that into a Matamata-Piako district, as there's only 49 in the district. Waitaki District has enough (189 sites) that it might make sense to split it into an Oamaru list and then everything else in the district. Generalissima (talk) (it/she) 01:50, 12 December 2024 (UTC)
- Hey @Generalissima did you see a question on your talk page I asked re:these lists TheLoyalOrder (talk) 02:37, 12 December 2024 (UTC)

Mapping help needed
[edit]Hello team, could somebody please make some maps for me?
- Sams Creek (New Zealand) could do with defining on OSM so that it can be used in an infobox. What LINZ has is the main creek (39324) and the middle branch (39326), but the north and south branches should also be traced, and the whole lot should show in the infobox.
- I'm working on a page covering the gold mining proposal for Sams Creek, and the two exploration permits should be mapped; it's referenced at the bottom of the draft. The GIS data come from New Zealand Petroleum & Minerals, and they use Crown copyright, i.e. the mapping data are openly licensed and can be used. I've poked around on their GIS, and it appears one can download their data.
I'm sure somebody here will have the right skills. Much appreciated. Schwede66 22:19, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
- I can't help with OSM (I'm assuming that's Open Street Map?) but I do notice that one of the images in the article may still be in copyright - the 1953 cadastral map (my understanding is that works published after 1945 are still covered by Crown copyright). However a 1928 cadastral map of Takaka SD, older in style but more clearly showing the relationship of the branches with their tributaries, is available at https://geodatahub.library.auckland.ac.nz/public/maps/LINZ/NZMS/NZMS_013/jpg/NZMS013_NN13_1928.jpg and may be out of copyright (again, just going by my understanding of Crown copyright). Daveosaurus (talk) 05:10, 20 December 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks, Daveosaurus. Yes, that's Open Street Map (I was assuming that those who have the technical ability would know that).
- My understanding is that Crown copyright is CC BY 3.0 NZ. Schwede66 23:22, 22 December 2024 (UTC)

Ōpōtiki
[edit]I have expanded the Ōpōtiki history section using material from Te Ara and several media sources. I also wrote a subsection on gangs using articles from The New Zealand Herald,1News and Stuff. Was wondering if someone could have a look at the section to see if there are any issues about balance and focusing on recent events. Thanks and wish you all the best for Christmas and New Year. Andykatib (talk) 12:30, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
- I've trimmed the gang stuff a bit and removed the header, whilst Opotiki does have a national reputation for it's gang activity, things such as Operation Highwater and politicians debating it were not that important to the town itself. Gangs of New Zealand could be a better target for some of the content removed.
- Heritage New Zealand has an online library of digitised heritage/archaeological reports: [3] some of these often contain a summary of an area's history and might provide some more content to use in the article. Traumnovelle (talk) 20:19, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Traumnovelle:,thanks for looking at the history section for Opotiki. Agree that Gangs of New Zealand could be a better place for Operation Highwater and other similar operations. Will also look at the Heritage New Zealand page on Opotiki. Wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Cheers. Andykatib (talk) 20:23, 22 December 2024 (UTC)

Christ Church Cathedral rose window
[edit]Bit of a long shot, but does anyone happen to have a vaguely decent photo of the cathedral rose window they could contribute to Commons?
I found this one on flickr but unfortunately it is not openly licensed. David Palmer//cloventt (talk) 21:34, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
- Resolved! I contacted the cathedral and they were happy to release an image. David Palmer//cloventt (talk) 23:52, 26 December 2024 (UTC)

National Parks project update
[edit]Ngā mihi o te tau hou e te whānau! About this time last year I suggested a collaboration on improving the articles on our national parks, with the goal of getting them all to GA standard. That turned into the WPNZ national parks collaboration, which has seen some great progress on some of the articles in that time - Aoraki Mount Cook National Park is now GA, Tongariro National Park is about to go up for review, and Kahurangi National Park has increased in size more than 10 times over from where it was at the start of last year. Unfortunately life had a few curveballs for me (as I'm sure it did for a lot of you, too) so I wasn't able to be as involved as I was hoping, and there's still a fair bit of work to be done. I'd love to keep work going on this if people are keen and will try to be a bit more involved myself, but feel free to head over to the project page or ask any pātai below if you've got them! Should we have automatic archiving of this notice board?
[edit]We have just had bold manual archiving after (I think) 4 months and then had it reverted as going too far in how recent archived posts were. Most pages like this have (I think) automatic archiving. Various parameters can be set, e.g. archive threads 60 days after the last contribution; keep at least the last 5 threads (even if they are past the age param). Settings something like that should strike a happy medium between the page getting too big, and being too hasty in archiving. Not to mention saving a bit of manual effort. Nurg (talk) 02:10, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
- YES. David Palmer//cloventt (talk) 02:11, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
- I've been archiving the page every four months for the last four years or so, simply because there wasn't automatic archiving and nobody else was doing it (the page had gotten to about 18 months of content before my first one). I'm happy to have this done automatically, but if I'm being honest I hate the pages where the archives are full of pages with just one or two topics. If we're going this route, I'd be keen to see it done in a way that manages to avoid that somehow. Turnagra (talk) 04:17, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
- I'm not really familiar with how it works but I think the 'maxarchivesize' param not only stops an archive page getting bigger than that setting, but also means that the archive will get that big before starting a new archive page. Nurg (talk) 05:52, 5 January 2025 (UTC)

Template:Did you know nominations/Oscar Goodman (basketball) is getting the kiss of death
[edit]I don't know if any of you knows of any interesting factoids about Oscar Goodman (basketball) or has any good argument as to why it should get a DYK run, but it is about to be timed out due to lack of enthusiasm by the various reviewers. The article has been edited by a disproportionate number of Kiwis and I bet none of them had even heard of him.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 07:58, 12 January 2025 (UTC)
- Personally, I think if he were American, his article would have been slapped in at DYK without an issue.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 07:59, 12 January 2025 (UTC)
- The problems with that are that the hooks aren't that interesting. It's not some pro-American bias or a lack of enthusiasm from the reviewers there. By the way the "disproportionate number of Kiwis" you mention is because several people look through the new articles list and make minor edits. ―Panamitsu (talk) 10:26, 12 January 2025 (UTC)
Year articles
[edit]I think we might need to establish an inclusion criteria for the year articles (e.g. 2024 in New Zealand) because they're quite long. The way I'd like to look at it is that we should only keep the stuff that are at least mildly interesting in say 100 years time. Here are some common themes that we might want to have removed from these articles:
- Car crash (unless they're notable, e.g. has an unusually large amount of deaths/injuries or a notable person is injured/killed)
- Court cases unless they're nationally notable. Un-notable in 2024 in NZ: "John Hope Muchirahondo is convicted of 17 counts of rape and sexual assault following a two months trial." Notable example: Make It 16 Incorporated v Attorney-General
- Layoffs (unless it's a large percentage of a company's, e.g. a third of staff are laid off)
- GDP/OCR figures (unless it's enter/exit recession or OCR hasn't been updated in a long time or something)
―Panamitsu (talk) 10:34, 12 January 2025 (UTC)
- I've also been thinking about going through the year articles and adding images. I've added three to 2024 in New Zealand but most year articles don't have images in them (apart from images of people). Does anyone oppose this? ―Panamitsu (talk) 10:36, 12 January 2025 (UTC)
- Images are appropriate. And I agree with your suggested inclusion criteria. Schwede66 17:40, 12 January 2025 (UTC)
- I've always had problems with year articles because they're almost never sourced to some sort of 'notable things in X year' type source but instead to a source about the event itself which often results in completely non-notable events getting added.
- A source somewhat after the event occurred helps establish long term notability and would be a good inclusion criteria. Some events don't even seem to be mentioned elsewhere on Wikipedia such as 'Over 200 New Zealand Defence Force civilian employees opt for voluntary redundancy as part of a restructuring plan' which only appears to be mentioned in the timeline article.
- I am removing all the named convictions of non-notable figures for arguably being BLP violations, seems undue to put some non-notable person's conviction in what is supposed to be an article on important events. Traumnovelle (talk) 19:57, 12 January 2025 (UTC)
- How about just removing the name of the perpetrator for the rather notable Murder of Yanfei Bao case? That is an obvious candidate for a year page. Schwede66 20:05, 12 January 2025 (UTC)
- I would've just removed the name but her case is already mentioned. I'm not opposed to restoration of the conviction without the name if you believe two mentions are merited. Traumnovelle (talk) 20:08, 12 January 2025 (UTC)
- For other notability issues, my instincts say if an event wasn't notable enough for an article (or at least a strong mention in one), then it's not notable enough for the year article. Acknowledging, of course, that some redlinks may be needed while the article waits to be written.
- Certainly some events seem to be over-mentioned. I'd be happier with one mention per event with it appearing on the most significant date. For example, the Hīkoi mō te Tiriti would be on the day it arrived at Parliament with the text "… having set out from Bluff and Cape Reinga 8 days earier on 11 November." Beeswaxcandle (talk) 01:53, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
- As a general rule of thumb, remember the 10/20-year test: will this event still be notable in 10 or 20 years' time? An event doesn't necessarily have to have its own article to be notable enough for the year article, especially for events that are "firsts" in New Zealand and we take for granted today - international jet travel (1963), domestic jet travel (1968), subscriber toll dialling and McDonald's (1976), in-vitro fertilisation (1984), unleaded petrol and mobile phone service (1987), etc.Lcmortensen (mailbox) 05:14, 13 January 2025 (UTC)

New Zealand reptiles distribution maps
[edit]I'm not sure if there are any fans of reptiles here, but I've created distribution maps for all NZ reptiles. They're available on Commons. Unless someone feels enthusiastic and can help by adding them to articles, I'll gradually do it myself. Cheers, Podzemnik (talk) 08:52, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
- Amazing, great work! I'm happy to try and help add some at some point if I find time, will see how I get on. Turnagra (talk) 09:11, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
- Wow, awesome. I suggest you add some categories for the parent category, Podzemnik. Schwede66 08:37, 17 January 2025 (UTC)
- I'm not sure what you mean by the parent category? Each map should be placed in its species/genus category and a category for distribution maps. The category I linked is a hidden user category, which is part of another hidden user category - i.e., a category not visible to most users. Podzemnik (talk) 17:57, 17 January 2025 (UTC)
ESEAP Conference Survey request from Wikimedia Taiwan
